Mixing Alcohol and Politics: The Boycott of TSC Sultan

By Joseph El-Khoury

Activism is back! The free people of Lebanon have forced TSC Sultan, the Kuwaiti group which acquired Monoprix and related retail outlets to sell alcohol in full public view. This must be one of the oddest campaigns I have heard of. A campaign to facilitate access to alcohol at a time where developed countries are looking for ways to encourage responsible limited drinking. I don’t have a problem with alcohol. I love nothing better than a nice glass of white wine to accompany my Syiadiye, an Almaza to wash down the peanuts or a Cuba Libre to go with my nachos. Alcohol is and will always be part and parcel of my social life. On the other hand I am very uncomfortable with the massive hysteria displayed by some Lebanese against what can be best described as a silly decision by an Arab Conservative establishment to position their alcohol beverages in an awkward corner of their stores. While the Kuwaitis showed complete lack of business sense, for reasons that I can only speculate on; the Lebanese (Christians mostly) behaved as if their entire existence depended on how prominently their Sauvignon Blanc was displayed on supermarket shelves. Faced with a fledgling democracy, a corrupt political elite, lack of opportunities and dependence on these same Gulf Arabs for employment and investment they choose to fight for their right to get drunk. Is it conceivable that this was the first step towards banning alcohol altogether and enforcing the veil when the Beirut nightlife rivals Miami in hedonism and booziness? Well, yes! According to the conspiracy theorists behind the Facebook group which gathered thousands of supporters in a matter of days. And this was not all. Apparently ‘brands of Pork products are limited’. Scary! A more militant group even advocates the broadening of the boycott to include (quote unquote):

● BOYCOTT " Dekkané " a store that just opened in Achrafieh, for not selling alcohol or pork.

● BOYCOTT " Pain d'or " because it doesn't serve alcohol or ham.

● BOYCOTT " Grand Café " : no alcohol, jellab and tea only.

● BOYCOTT :" Burger king " for withdrawing bacon from it's menu .

● BOYCOTT : "Mac Donald's " for not serving bacon while doing so in other countries.

● BOYCOTT :" Spinneys Tripoli " for selling alcohol in a different and specific area.

● BOYCOTT : " Dunkin donuts " for not serving bacon although they do worldwide.

● BOYCOTT : " COOP broumana " , it has a seperate section for alcohol with a seperate cashier

Originally I thought this a spoof of some sort, then I heard rumours that distributors and related business interests were behind the initial move to boycott. Others have mentioned that some political movements were feeding into the hype for electoral reasons. Whatever the mechanism, a move to boycott is a political statement and is disproportionate in this context. It would have been wiser to highlight this issue in the media and rather leave it to the customers to vote with their feet. Given it a political and existential dimension only serves those who have still to benefit from the ghetto mentality that remains unshakable among Lebanese Christians. The net result is a false solidarity and a misplaced victory for the bigots running our country. Bacardi will not preserve your way of life and Johnny Walker will not bring back Lebanon‘s glory days. I strongly suggest you look for your redemption elsewhere!

“Middle of what? Middle to whom?”

By Najate Zouggari

The renowned Egyptian writer, doctor and activist Nawal El Saadawi is currently promoting the English translations of her most famous writings, reissued by Zed Books publisher. As a consequence, she is meeting her readers in diverse places – libraries, universities, etc. - engaging with them a very stimulating dialogue that takes an Arab perspective on political issues related to cultural, social and sexual prejudices. Born in 1931, El Saadawi is just as you could imagine her: radical, impressive but still very nice, attentive to her readers’ feedback and willing to understand different views from hers – at least, to a certain extent. Despite her stubbornness, the 78 year-old lady missed neither eloquence nor sense of humor. I met her at Housman’s, a radical bookshop in London.

Nawal El Saadawi started her presentation by bringing her audience into line. She simply refused to be defined exclusively as an activist. She said: “Everywhere I go, they call me an activist. It’s only a part of what I am. I’m a writer, I’m a novelist.” She then deconstructed in a very witty, simple and efficient way the heavy prejudiced category of “Middle-East” by asking “Middle of what? Middle to whom?”. First highlight : Nawal El Saadawi is not an activist from the Middle-East.
As a significant fact, the preliminary question she actually had to answer was about an Afghan regime’s law that aimed to punish married women who would refuse a sexual intercourse with their husband. Obviously, the simple fact of having to answer such a question is problematic – and hopefully it got on Nawal’s nerves: “Of course, I’m against that! I’m against that in Afghanistan, in England, in America, in Egypt, under Christian law, under Jewish law, under Islamic law, under Buddhist and Hindi law...”. But now, she added with irony, “Islam became the only religion which allows women’s rape, women’s repression, women’s circumcision, the only religion which is undemocratic.” Indeed Muslim people always are expected to strongly condemn so called “Islamist terrorists” and, as soon as they dare qualifying themselves as Muslims, they are immediately suspected to be a threat to modernity by complying to “violent politicized ideologies” – which is an interpretation as absurd (and dishonest) as trying to find in Ku Klux Klan disciples practices of the truth of Roman Catholicism.

Nawal El Saadawi demonstrated how the term “Middle-East” was not an objective term of geography but the historical product of a domination. At that point, it might be useful to remember Yves Lacoste’s dictum in 1976: ‘Geography’s first use is for waging war’. Saadawi brilliantly proved to her audience how the most simple terminology was deeply rooted in a colonial history that gives to “the West” rights and legitimacy to define the others’ religion and practices. There is no innocent word in politics. Nawal Saadawi’s intelligence of the struggles for power, as well as her radical comments - “there is no postcolonialism, because it would mean there is no more colonialism” - resonate with the marxist tradition she belongs to.

Unfortunately, she precisely fell herself in the West-centered trap she mentioned - by criticizing in a very hasty and rough way religions in general, Islam in particular. Very often, people who prefer not to bother reading Karl Marx, still enjoy quoting his famous expression “opiate of masses” to disqualify religious beliefs. But what they - deliberately or not - forgot to mention is the rest of the sentence, for Marx himself being much more subtle than the self-declared Marxists. He actually wrote, in addition to his famous reference to drug, that religion also was: “the heart of a heartless world and the soul of soulless conditions”.
It is not my point here to make the apology of any religion, I am just stressing on the fact it is unfair, even from a Marxist point of view, to reduce believers - especially when they are dominated in the context Nawal Saadawi clearly explained - to a zillion of irrational morons. This despising attitude only echoes the prejudices of a heavily intolerant and biased French secularism that Saadawi precisely praised as a model.
At that point, by saying how great and fair was the French government that banished “religious signs” in French public schools (Loi n° 2004-228 15 mars 2004), she simply switched off her critical sense. I also attribute her lack of lucidity on this part to the fact she is neither French, nor living in France. It is important to remember that the only students banished from schools were actually women and Muslim. It is important to remember François Baroin’s words when he was the spokesman of UMP - the party affiliated to President Nicolas Sarkozy. He said on France Television: “We can’t compare the veil to the kippa, because the veil is a political tool to conquest the spirits while the kippa is a reference to God”. I don’t know if one should just cry or laugh in front of such a deep stupidity. This incredibly ridiculous statement - and double standard - is actually both an insult to Islam and Judaism. And to intelligence, as well.

Being myself a feminist and a - non veiled - Muslim, I felt during the vote of this law followed by the very obscene media blitz that showed exclusions of veiled girls from schools, something which deeply echoed with... Theodor Herzl’s experience. I know this statement might sound eccentric but let me explain it. Theodor Herzl was a Paris correspondent for the Neue Freie Presse in 1895 where he witnessed the Dreyfus affair, a notorious antisemitic case in which a French Jewish captain was humiliated and falsely convicted for spying for the Germans - at that time designed as the enemies of France. Herzl’s idea of zionism was at the beginning a reaction to this injustice. My point here is not to discuss the legitimacy of zionism but simply to point out a continuity in French history: these Muslim girls - all under eighteen year-old, some of them only twelve - were exactly in the same position as Alfred Dreyfus, but the Emile Zola defending her were very few.
Accused of hiding behind their veils a threat from abroad, exactly like Alfred Dreyfus, I think though their position was even harder because they were powerless - women, teenagers, students.

On this point I’m afraid, Nawal El Saadawi was simply wrong. She thought the law is good because every citizen in principle has to comply and the legislators wanted all the religions to be equally treated - which is obviously not the case as Baroin pathetically pointed out in the historical quote mentioned in a previous paragraph. You cannot judge the fairness of a law on the perfection of its ideal. You cannot judge the fairness of a law on the good intentions of its legislators. You judge a law on its concrete, practical, ethical consequences for the citizens of the society in which this law has been promulgated. The stubborn idealism of Nawal El Saadawi - disgracefully shared by a large majority of French feminists - reminds me of this beautiful sentence by Charles Péguy about the German philosopher Immanuel Kant: “he has clean hands, but he has no hands.” They speak about women’s rights but they support a law that, in last instance, prevents girls from the basic rights of education.

Still, I was glad to meet Nawal El Saadawi - and honored to speak with her. I enjoyed her witty retorts and her deep, frank critical sense. “You don’t need a PhD to rebel against any type of injustice.” Those are some of her words you can hardly forget.

The Khawajat Complex

By Dr Numan Gharaibeh

Fear of others may have evolutionary background as the survival of small bands of hunters and gathers (90% of human’s history) may have depended on it. However, we have outgrown much of our evolutionary baggage, and we’ll likely outgrow this as well. The age of conquest and domination seems to be over or at least replaced by economic dominance.

Most of the current Arab societies/states suffered from colonization. The era of subjugation by foreign powers started at least since the Ottomans moved from Anatolia south to occupy Syria, Jordan, Palestine, Egypt, and western Arabia between 1516 and 1517 CE (AD). Even before the fall of the Ottoman Empire in World War I, Egypt fell to Napoleon in 1789 then Britain in 1882. Algeria was under French occupation since 1830. Morocco’s occupation by France and Spain was completed in 1912 when the Sultan abdicated. After the end of the Ottoman rule in World War I, Arabs came under the rule of different European powers (Britain, France, Italy, and Spain) and some countries did not get independent until the 1970s.

In Prospero and Caliban, Octave Mannoni attempted a psychological examination of the phenomenon of colonization and its effects on colonized and colonizer (or colonial). He emphasized the link between the “dependence complex” and the inferiority complex of the colored peoples [sic.] and viewed it as similar to the inferiority complex [in individuals, mind you] described by Alfred Adler. Mannoni opined that the greatest fear of the colonized was abandonment not dependence. In fact, he asserted that colonized people were happy to establish a dependent relationship with the colonial when there is a threat of abandonment.

In the Arabic vernacular, the “Khawaja(t) complex” refers to a social phenomenon characterized by indiscriminate over-valuation of everything and everybody Western, European, or White—regardless of real or true value. The Khawaja(t) complex is usually conceptualized as a dialectical inferiority-superiority complex which manifests itself in the relationship between the stereotypical Arab (i.e. a hypothetical representative of the Arab crowd) and what/who is European, Western, or White.

According to Gustav LeBon and Eric Fromm, a sociological investigation focuses on the character matrix common to most members of a group; it does not take into account the character structure of a particular individual. Although Alfred Adler is better known for his individual psychology, he acknowledged the universality of inferiority feelings [in individuals], but he reserved the term “complex” to the individual who self-hypnotizes, or self-deceives into feeling superior. One may assume that a nation may self-hypnotize or self-deceives itself into feeling superior.

Children’s formation of concepts and attitudes starts at birth—and some learning starts even in the womb. By internalizing the world of the parents, siblings, extended family, tribe, and so on, overtly or covertly, colored children start learning that Western things and persons are more worthy than local things and persons. Messages in the mass media including movies and TV as well as what is learned directly from older generations may reinforce these beliefs. The “role models” are Western role models (e.g. Cinderella, Snow White, Tarzan, The Little Mermaid, Rapunzel, etc.).

Western technology is far advanced compared to Arab technology. There is very real superiority in the industrial machine in the West. There is cutting edge research and development that is also far advanced in the West. Manufacturing standards in the West are superior to the standards of local Arab countries. Therefore, it is only reasonable to expect Western goods to have higher quality than local goods. The accelerating pace of competition and the amount of money, time and effort invested in keeping an edge over competitors may prolong this differential.

Defeat and submissiveness that has plagued Arabs for the most part of this century. However, it is very hard to tease out the impact of 400 years of Ottoman oppression from the impact of the shorter-lived Western domination. The major difference between the Ottoman and British rules is the fact that the Ottomans were Muslims. In fact, the Ottomans have used that fact to gain favor among local tribes and promote acceptance among Arabs. Among the observant Muslims, the Ottoman Sultans are still viewed as the rightful successors of the Umayyad and Abbasid Caliphs.

In summary, the causes for the Khawaja(t) complex are educational, factual reasons relating to superior Western technology and superior products, and historical (repeated colonization by foreign powers since at least 1516 CE (AD). The keys to eradicating this complex and preventing it from taking hold in future generations are education, economic development, and home grown role models to replace the Osamas and Saddams and their ilk.

The Aounist dilemma: reform or victory

By Joseph El-khoury

Observers of the Lebanese elections could not have failed to notice the tensions arising within the ‘Free Patriotic Movement’ (FPM/Tayyar) led by General Michel Aoun in the build up to the 7th June. Having kept us guessing for weeks the General finally released the names of his candidates for the key electoral districts of Jezzine, Baabda and Kesrwan. The reform and change bloc new line up in the Christian heartland of Kesrwan, a Aounist stronghold since the 2005 elections, is noticeable by its lack of change. All the indications are that the opposition list will perform well in this district with only limited possibility of a challenge from a disparate cohort of local politicians with little to offer than a return to the stale and uninspiring pre-2005 situation. A number of accusations and rumours preceded the announcement, the latest being from controversial editor of Ad-Diyar daily Charles Ayyoub who claimed that a number of financial transactions in Aoun’s favour influenced his final choice of candidates. The disappointment comes also from within the Tayyar, as described by inside sources to El-Nashra. In effect, the unchanged list denies any new faces coming from the ranks the chance to genuinely establish a legacy within the area. Instead Aoun chose a more reliable alliance of loosely connected traditional personalities who operate under the umbrella of the Reform bloc. Candidate Nader Mrad, a Tayyar activist was the first victim of this course of events. He, who until a few days before was still insisting that he had the backing of his party, had to accept that electoral priorities came first. A similar picture had emerged in Beirut district 1 where long time student activist Zia Abs was originally mentioned only to be dismissed in favour of Abou Jamra, a veteran Aoun right hand man from 1989 but with little charisma and well past his expiry date.

The battle of Baabda even held more hopes for the Tayyar rank and file to challenge the norms of Lebanese politics and be represented by a non-Christian. Ramzi Kanj, Shiite and party member has been a rising star over the past 2 years, was sacrificed on the altar of an agreement with Hezbollah that followed a disagreement with the Amal movement of Nabeeh Berri in Jezzine. It is true that the FPM has fielded in the same district Alain Aoun, another young Turk with a promising future. But Aoun is the general‘s nephew and cynics might argue that the family connection trumps the reformist credentials of the young Aoun. My impression is further confirmed by browsing at the faces of the remaining candidates on the movement’s website; Mostly suited men in their 50s in keeping with the long held image of the Lebanese politician. Gilberte Zwayn, hardly a feminist icon, is left to represent 50% of the Lebanese population rendering the Tayyar’s advertising campaign (Sois belle et vote / Be pretty and vote) even more ironic.

Regardless of my prejudices against the Aounist interpretation of history, one could at least see glimmers of hope for the emergence of a genuine secular political party that would stimulate a battle of ideas on the national level. And while the 14th March tenors of the Cedar revolution seem to have already abandoned any pretentions of reform ; the elections, won or lost, might relegate the FPM to just another self-serving tribe. In the silent struggle between the (Free Patriotic) movement and the (Reform and Change) bloc, it is certainly the latter that comes out on top... unfortunately for everyone.

'Jesus' comes to Afghanistan

It seems the Taliban are not the only extremists thriving in Afghanistan. In this clip broadcast on the English AlJazeera some elements within the US Army unashamedly draw a parallel between their duty as soldiers and their obligations as Evangelical Christians. Encouraged by a head chaplain (also a senior officer), they use militaristic vocabulary to justify their proselytizing strategy, with the use of Bibles translated in Pashtoun and other local languages.

Although this is probably not a reflection of the majority of US Servicemen, it is worrying that the Christian version of the Madrasas seem to operate unchecked in Bagram Air-Base. Over the past decade Killing in the name of! has become mainstream again and the rest of us are caught up in these anachronistic religious wars . It is high time for the seculars to step in.

Arab Countries top list of 'worst countries for bloggers'

Once again the Arab world, known for its general ineptitude in anything involving competition on an international level (The Olympics, The World Cup, The Nobel Prize...among others), has topped the charts in the field of human rights deprivation and abuse.

This time we should be grateful to the authorities of Syria (3), Saudi Arabia (5), Tunisia (7) and Egypt (10) for flying the flag in the category of 'Worst Countries for Bloggers'. Tough competitions came from the likes of Burma (1) and Turkmenistan (9). Our Iranian brothers (2), with whom we seem to share so much these days despite centuries of enmity, narrowly missed the top spot but have promised to keep trying for next year. Same goes for the Egyptians who escaped relegation this time round. It is noteworthy that a number of these Arab countries are considered moderate and pro-Western. This fact will obviously not come as a surprise to our informed readers.

The Report was released yesterday 30th April in New York by the 'Committee to protect journalists' based on nominations followed by a poll of its staff and outside experts.
