Hezbollah!Peek-a-Boo...You are not the Shiites representative

By Nadine Sibai

SO THEY LIBERATED THE SOUTH OF LEBANON. GREAT SUCCESS! AND SO THEY WON THE JULY WAR. GOOD FOR THEM!! WHAT IS NEXT? HAVE THEY NOT MADE UP ENOUGH EXCUSES TO KEEP THEIR HEGEMONY? HAVE THEY NOT MISLEAD AMPLE PEOPLE?THEY HAVE CLAIMED RESISTANCE, THEY HAVE TAKEN ON NATIONALISM--FAILING TO EVER IDENTIFY IT--, THEY HAVE ROLE PLAYED THE QUIET POLITE LAMB, THEY HAVE ASSERTED THAT WEAPONS ARE FOR THE MERE USE AGAINST ISRAEL... WE ALL KNEW THOSE CONCEPTS WEREN'T THE TOTAL TRUTH AND A HIDDEN AGENDA WAS AN EVIDENT CONCEALED ELEMENT (THOUGH WE HOPED OTHERWISE). HOWEVER, WE PLAYED THE GAME AND ARGUED WITH THEM ADAPTING THEIR OWN REASONING FORCING OURSELVES TO BE ON THE SAME WAVE LENGTH SO AS NOT TO ENTICE FURTHER DISPUTES. BUT LET'S BE FRANK. WHO COULD ARGUE WITH THEM KNOWING THAT BEHIND THEIR PSEUDO-ENLIGHTENED DIALOGUES ARE COPIOUS AMMUNITIONS?

WELL, DEAR HIZBULLAH, HERE IS A LETTER FOR YOU: YOU ARE A CAPITALIST 'ORGANIZATION'-- SHORT OF DEFINING THE TERM, RUNNING MONEY-CREATING OUTLETS ALL OVER THE SOUTHERN SUBURB OF BEIRUT, SOUTH LEBANON, AND THE BIQAA'. YOU BUILD YOUR GHETTO BENEFITING YOUR ' LOYAL CHILDREN OF THE SECT' EXCLUDING EVERY OTHER CHILDREN. YOU NEVER CARED ABOUT LABOURERS, TAXES, POWER CUTS, INFLATION. AND YOU NEVER BLAMED THE CURRENT GOVERNMENT FOR THEIR POLICIES WHEN YOU WERE SAT IN IT AND STILL PART OF THE COALITION. SO LET'S JUST IMMEDIATELY AND PERMANENTLY CROSS THIS ONE OUT OF YOUR LIST OF EXCUSES.YOU ARE NOT DEMOCRATIC AND HAVE JUST FAILED IN THE 'LEBANONITY' TEST. YOU SADLY AND UNFORTUNATELY CAN BE COMPARED TO OUR EVERLASTING ZIONIST ENEMY OF ISRAEL. YOU BOTH FEEL SUPERIOR AND THUS YOU DO WHAT 'YOU' THINK YOU ARE OUGHT TO DO DISREGARDING OTHER PEOPLES' BELIEFS, NEEDS AND EMOTIONS. YOU BOTH FAIL TO DEMONSTRATE AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITITES SCHEMA AS YOU CONTINUOUSLY DISRESPECT OTHER IDENTITIES AND PERSONAS SHARING YOUR LAND. YOUR PREVIOUS MARGINALIZATION BY PRE-EXISTING GOVERNMENTS DOES NOT JUSTIFY YOUR PRESENT ATROCITIES.

I EMPATHIZE WITH ALL THOSE FEELING RIDICULED AND FRUSTRATED. AND I FEEL SORRY FOR THOSE WHO ARE UNABLE TO MARCH DOWN THE STREETS HOLDING BANNERS STATING: "HIZBULLAH! THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING BUT YOU DO NOT REPRESENT US. AND WE DO NOT WANT YOU".

Dear Nadine.

I disagree with you on one point. Hezbollah does represent the majority view among the Shiites. And that cannot be ignored.

So the question is how to oppose the party without alienating the community...This brings us back to the Christians-Kataeb duality of 1975. While trying to isolate the Kataeb the national movement ended up fighting the Christians.

What is this "Lebanonity Test" thing that one has to pass? Is it some sort of a blood test? The is the first time I have ever heard of such a meaninglesss term. Perhaps, I need to be enlightened and eduacted about it. Can you name someone or a group that has succeeded in your "Lebanonity" test? I am also interested in knowing how this test works and what sort of criteria you use in arriving at the result in determing whether an alleged Lebanese is truly a Lebanese or not claiming to be one.

Notwithstanding the above, in reality and in a more concerete terms we have all failed as "Lebanese" and as a nation and there is a lot of blame to go around, and without any exceptions, especially those in both March 14th and 8th. Lebanon exists only in name and as geographical entity, no more no less, with sectarian clans roaming around destroying and pillaging. You do not even need to undertake a test to come to that conclusion. As long as those who live in this geographical or perhaps more accurately geopolitical sectarian entity that we often falsely refer to as Lebanon(a country)continue to rally behind the "March gangsters",nothing is going to change.

In this case, I guess it is true that "every people get the leaders it deserves". Yet, being the optism am I and not wanting anyone to feel sorry for me, I will head your call to marchwith you during the month of March, but to say to all of those "March Gangsters", "Thank you for nothing. You do not represent us and we politely request that you get the hell out of our lives, our present and our future".

Dear anonymous,

Thank you for your comment. It is true that it's the 1st time you hear about the meaningless term of 'Lebanonity test'. However, from your discussion above, it was obvious that the term was clearly understood and argued, thus giving it lots of meaning.

I am not here to define nor do I intend to evaluate 'Lebanonity'. Being Lebanese is a tool used solely by both March 8 and 14 to defend their conflicting perspectives. And, in my opinion, they both fail to be NATIONALISTIC, they both lack the skills of politics, and they both have never worked on developing a NATION/STATE. We are NATIONS.

Finally, though I ridicule March 8 and 14, I chose to target this letter towards a specific faction.

I stand corrected. I cannot agree with you more with regard to your condemnation of the conduct of both camps. Thank you very much.

Begs the question of the "us" and "them" , that won't secularism solve the question of who is representing who?

If we could transcend religion as an identity to what it really should be, a personal thing, then Hezbollah can no longer use his representative claim and abuse it thereafter.
