The ‘values’ of Israeli soldiers according to their spokeswoman
Major Avital Leibovich is an Israeli Army spokesperson with a talent for the use of the English language. Listening to her on BBC Radio commenting on the events in Gaza is the closest thing I will hopefully get to have my eyes pecked by hungry birds. It is not that Major Leibovich’s style is more revolting that for example the debonair attitude of Mark Regev (Israeli Foreign Ministry Spokesman).
This obviously well trained civil servant is not expected to deliver an objective assessment of the situation but the ‘truth according to Tsahal’, which technically consists at showing Israeli soldiers off for the cleanly shaven idealistic boy scouts that they aren’t.
The world is led to believe that these idealistic young men are fighting a war for civilization and will go back to their cozy jobs in IT once the Hamas hydra is defeated, passing by Goa (India) for an orgy of drugs, sex and trance music.
What I found of really poor taste was that according to Major Leibovich, who can be best described as a military version of Tzipi Livni, these soldiers were brought up and indoctrinated with ‘values’ that prevent them from targeting civilians deliberately. A principle they have clearly been applying since the early days of the Hagganah in the 1930s and which explains the murder of foreign activists Tom Hurndall and Rachel Corrie a few years ago. Maybe the judicious use of the word ‘deliberate’ clears them from the responsibility for the collateral loss of life through indiscriminate firing at human targets, bombing crowded refugee camps, using heavy artillery in dense populated areas, resorting to legal weapons illegally (white Phosphorus) and illegal methods illegally (so called targeted assassinations).
In a sentence, ‘we don’t shoot them on purpose but we couldn’t give a damn whether they would all perish as long as accomplish our mission’. In my books this moral attitude is not far from the one adopted by Genghis Khan as he swept through the then civilised world, ransacking and pillaging. Also standards of education in Israel seem to vary, since I remember well the picture of 9 year old schoolgirls wishing us hell on bombs later to be dropped on Lebanese villages.
One needs to only glance at YouTube to find examples of these same Israeli soldiers humiliating elderly Palestinians at check points and abusing Arab prisoners racially. Nonetheless in contrast, Mrs. Leibovich is quick to compare the behavior of her ‘boys’ to the Hamas militants who fire homemade rockets at Israel. That same Israel that has relentlessly hounded them, even during the truce, and has blockaded the strip for months keeping the resident population in the harshest of living conditions. Somewhat I doubt that if Hamas was endowed with the might of the Israeli army it would still resort to the same frankly desperate and ineffective tactics. Funny enough, we were reminded by the eminent Labour MP Sir Gerald Kaufman today, himself Jewish, that the foundation of the Israeli state rested heavily on terrorist actions, such as the notorious blowing up of the King David hotel in Jerusalem carried out by the Irgon. This outfit retains a privileged position in Israeli hearts and minds. So let’s not be fooled by prefabricated terms and expressions, this war is neither a clash of values nor a clash of civilizations. This war is about the land and justice that Israel insists on denying the Palestinian people.

3 - Gerard, R: La violence et le sacre,Grasset, Paris, 1972,117-118.

Guantanamo Bay: The 21st Century Guide to Torture

‘They beat us up. They taunted us with racist insults. They locked us in cold rooms, below zero, with one cold meal a day. They hung us up by our hands. They deprived us of sleep, and when we started to fall asleep, they beat us on the head. They showed us films of the most horrendous torture sessions. They showed us photographs of torture victims – dead, swollen, covered in blood. They kept us under constant threat of being moved elsewhere to be tortured even more. They doused us with cold water. They forced us to do the military salute to the American national anthem. They forced us to wear women's clothes. They forced us to look at pornographic images. They threatened us with rape. They would strip us naked and make us walk like donkeys, ordering us around. They made us sit down and stand up five hundred times in a row. They humiliated the detainees by wrapping them up in the Israeli and American flags, which was their way of telling us that we were imprisoned because of a religious war’.

Do not Free the Lebanese in Syrian jails! An (Arab) Democratic Appeal

1- They are not important (Michel Aoun during his joint interview with Hassan Nassrallah last year, said that this was not a major issue…and those in jail for fighting for Aoun – while he was hiding in a French embassy- should I think kill themselves out of shame).
2- They are guilty…Yes, they are guilty of being anti-Syrian, they should be hanged…this is how Arab Democracy should be.
3- They love torture …no doubt about that, if they did not love being tortured they wouldn’t have chosen to (Arab) democratically go to jail.
4- They are getting free diet sessions (one prisoner who was released last year recalled how he got 1 potato – rass batata – a day).
5- They are anti democratic. If in Syrian jail, that must be because they are against the Arab Syrian Democratic Republic!
6- They simply do not exist – Sayyed Hassan Nassrallah in his celebration speech for Samir Quntar, listed the Resistance’s next objectives: and Lebanese in Syrian jails did not make the list... Lebanese citizen Sayyed Hassan set the freedom of 4 Iranian diplomats in Israeli jails as an objective, rather than those Lebanese prisoners; that must be because they do not exist.

All is not fine in Egypt
When President Hosni Mubarak appointed Dr Ahmad Nazif as the prime minister of the country in the summer of 2004, everybody - in and out of Egypt - was talking about a new generation of government in which Mubarak's son, Jamal, has been playing a major part from behind-the-scene. With limited reshuffles, Nazif's cabinet included more business people than technocrats and the influential body within the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) led by Jamal Mubarak became more and more powerful.
At that time, many analysts and international institutions hailed the developments as they were keen to see any sort of reform in a stagnant Egypt.
Initially, the new government did live up to its expectations and did not falter. In its first couple of years, it launched an ambitious programme to reform the economy and set straight most of the books on macro-economy.
Though some of the reforms were painful and stirred internal opposition, most Egyptians gave the government the benefit of the doubt and waited to see its trickle-down effect.
Except for a section of the elite - a marginal minority in Egypt - most people did not care too much about the issue of "inheritance of power" from the father to the son and the preparation for the rise of Mubarak Jr.
Majority of the Egyptians are indifferent to the ruling regime, to the extent that in the 19th century when they had the power in their hands they brought in an Albanian (Mohammad Ali) to rule them.
Being indifferent does not essentially mean that they do not know; they know about the sins of omission and commission in their country. But they always say: OK, fine, as I can live and sustain it. But of late they are finding it difficult to meet their basic needs and foresee a bleak future.
Not successful
Clever and enthusiastic ministers in Nazif's government, especially those in charge of the economy, were not successful in gaining the trust of the people in what they were doing. They were keener to talk in English to the outside world and left the more than 70 million Egyptians to the anxious wait to see any benefit.
If it were acceptable in the first half of the government's time in office to focus on major - and sometimes shocking - moves to liberalise the economy, it might not be the case in the last couple of years.
As the government kept on its programme without any political effort to convince the people of the "light at the end of the tunnel", the tide is now turning against it and unfortunately against the much needed reforms itself.
One might argue that economic reform without political reform cannot be a remedy, especially in a country such as Egypt. Yet, even though the pace of political reform does not match the economic reform, the government is trying to force the latter with some political oppression.
That cannot work, and might even strip the economic reform of any meaning. The number of laws passed in the legislature and amendments made to them in a very short time is not a safeguard to a change; rather they are fragile rules that are forced on the people who have no say, or are just ignored as ignorant.
Self-proclaimed economic super-geeks will not be able to keep on like this. Their actions threaten the delicate socio-political fabric of the country. You cannot simply impose models that look perfect on paper and expect the tens of millions of people to cheer you as a hero.
Egypt is not a poor country and seeing the number of Egyptian millionaires living in the UK and elsewhere in Europe and North America, you can tell that the country is gifted.
It was ill-managed, right. But it does not seem to be well-managed now as far as its people are deprived of everything: basic needs and rights including having a say in what is going on in their country.

The Doctor, The Patient and the Terrorist

Imagine this scene in Baghdad. Having just ended a lengthy phone conversation, the acting medical director of a mental establishment asks a nurse to bring two female patients into his office. The purpose is not a therapeutic intervention or a change in medication but the start of a process that will lead to two suicide bombings in a busy street market. The director is subsequently arrested and confesses to having been convinced by Al-Qaeda operatives of the use of mentally ill and vulnerable patients in terrorist attacks.
Obviously mental disability comes in different shapes and forms but on one extreme the possibility remains that these two ladies were either not given a choice or did not have the mental capacity to make the choice of martyrdom. Having committed their act under coercion, it cannot be reasonably recognized as holy even by the most reactionary religious expert and its only symbolic value resides in the level of desperation reached by those behind the attacks.
They say that the degree of civilization of a society is recognized at the way it treats its weakest elements. I fully agree with this statement and as a doctor feel strongly that the medical profession is in a privileged position to uphold this principle. According to the following report at least one Iraqi doctor failed at the universal duty of care embodied in the Hippocratic Oath while another paid with his life the price of safeguarding human dignity.

Hospital boss arrested over al-Qaeda attack by human boobytraps
Martin Fletcher in Baghdad
The acting director of a Baghdad psychiatric hospital has been arrested on suspicion of supplying al-Qaeda in Iraq with the mentally impaired women that it used to blow up two crowded animal markets in the city on February 1, killing about 100 people.
Iraqi security forces and US soldiers arrested the man at al-Rashad hospital in east Baghdad on Sunday. They then spent three hours searching his office and removing records. Sources told The Times that the two women bombers had been treated at the hospital in the past.
“They [the security forces] arrested the acting director, accusing him of working with al-Qaeda and recruiting mentally ill women and using them in suicide bombing operations,” a hospital official said.
Ibrahim Muhammad Agel, director of the hospital, was killed in the Mansour district of Baghdad on December 11 by gunmen on motorbikes. Colleagues suspect that he was shot for refusing to cooperate with al-Qaeda. Even before Sunday’s arrest, US officials believed that al-Qaeda was scouring Iraq’s hospitals for mentally impaired patients whom it could dupe into acting as suicide bombers. They said that al-Qaeda had used the mentally impaired as unwitting bombers before. “We have fairly good reason to believe this is not the first time they have recruited mentally handicapped individuals,” said one senior officer, though he did not think there had been more than half a dozen cases.
The attraction of mentally impaired women to al-Qaeda was obvious, he said. Being women they could get close to targets with less chance of being stopped or searched; being mentally impaired, they were “less likely to make a rational judgment about what they are being asked to do”.
The February 1 attacks were the deadliest – and most chilling – to hit the Iraqi capital in months. One of the women was given a backpack full of explosives and ballbearings, the other a suicide vest laden with explosives. They were sent into the middle of al-Ghazl and New Baghdad markets, which were packed with people. Their explosives were then detonated by remote control.
The Times was shown photographs of the two young women’s severed heads, which were recovered from the wreckage. One very obviously had Down’s syndrome. The other had the round face, high forehead and other features often associated with Down’s syndrome, but her symptoms were less pronounced.
An insight into the way al-Qaeda thinks came in a letter written by one of its leaders in Anbar province that the US military seized in November and released in part on Sunday. “It is possible to use doctors working in private hospitals and where the infidels/ apostates are treated who have serious conditions to be injected with [air bubbles] that will kill them,” it said.
The US military believes that al-Qaeda is adopting these extreme tactics because the prevalence of check-points and concrete barriers is making car bombings harder, and fewer foreign suicide bombers are reaching Iraq. The number of car bombs has fallen steadily from a peak of 112 last March to 27 last month. Conversely, there were 16 pedestrian suicide bombs in January – the second-highest total in 13 months.
Foreign jihadists – invariably male – used to carry out 90 per cent of the suicide bombings in Iraq, but the US military believes that tighter controls have halved the influx to 50 or 60 a month. The officer conceded that protecting public places against individual suicide bombers was almost impossible. “You really can’t stop a determined bomber from blowing themselves up,” he said. “The key is continuing to take down the terrorist network that conducts these operations.”

Feiruz singing, Riad Seif arrested: Drama in "Damascus Arab Capital of Culture"
What a coincidence! The same day Feiruz, the Lebanese Arab diva was playing for the first time in Damascus since more than 20 years, Riad Seif, a former Syrian MP was arrested for being a member of the Damascus Declaration, a political document asking the Syrian regime to end the emergency law imposed decades ago, and allowing more individual, political, social, and intellectual freedom.
While Syrians are still enjoying the eight representations of “Sah el Nom”, a play starring Feiruz at the Damascus Opera House, a fan of her told the BBC that “generation after generation, Syrians have listened to Feiruz songs and found in them an expression of their daily worries”. What this citizen hinted at is that many of Feiruz songs express as well worries from the kind of “political freedom”.
Since the moment Feiruz confirmed she would be singing in Damascus, she found herself at the heart of a controversy in Beirut. At a time of tension between the two capitals, many Lebanese consider her duty as a national symbol to come before her status as an Arab Diva. They still remember how “noble” her decision was when she decided to disappear from the Lebanese art scene during the civil war (1975-1990). She explained that her decision had one and only goal: To avoid being criticized as supporting one or the other of the warring factions during the bloody long war.
At First glance, there is of course no compelling reason for Feiruz to boycott the Syrian scene or any Arab art scene. Feiruz as a heritage and as an artistic value is beyond any artificial geographical boundaries in the Middle East. I hope to see her singing in Baghdad one day to relieve the terrible suffering of the Iraqi people. I hope to see her singing as well in Riyad, in Tripoli and any other Arab capitals where a people is oppressed by a regime similar to the Syrian Baathist one.
At the same time, it hurts watching Feiruz opening her show in Damascus the day Riad Seif is arrested. It hurts even more to know that neither Feiruz nor her composer son Ziad Rahbani realized they had been stabbed in the back by the Syrian regime, which chose to arrest Seif on that very specific day. But let’s suppose they had and Feiruz in retaliation opened the show with a dedication to the political prisoners in every Arab jail, would the Syrian dignitaries still be clapping!
No doubt Riad Seif had a ticket for this first show; anyone in the audience noticed an empty seat?

Our Friend Muammar Kaddafi

Muammar Kaddafi is a dictator. That has been a banal fact of life since the 1980s. What is more interesting is that this predecessor of Saddam as embodiment of pure evil in the minds of many westerners is now welcome in France. Actually he, along with his millions in oil revenues, has received the best of French red carpet hospitality. After years of being ostracised from the international community for ’ irresponsible’ behaviour Muammar is now back in fashion. If there was one example of collusion between the interests of what has been called the Military-Industrial complex and the foreign policy of a government, that would be it. To be fair, during the photo opportunities Nicolas Sarkozy looked slightly uncomfortable and many of his ministers appeared lost for words while others in his own party and the opposition made their views clear on the visitor’s record on human rights. Mr Sarkozy did ‘ask’ his Libyan friend to ‘do better’ on democracy (A statement later denied by Kaddafi on French TV) but despite her brave stand, Rama Yade, French secretary for human rights, was unfortunately wrong. France can be treated as a doormat when its economy is doing badly and foreign investments can translate into jobs for French workers. Airbus and Dassault might be the direct beneficiary but faced with the prospect of long term economical benefits the French Left is unlikely to challenge the Realpolitik adopted by their opponent for fear of upsetting the working class and the business world alike. On a positive note this rapprochement between Paris and Tripoli could facilitate Mr Bernard Khouchner’s mission in Lebanon by endearing France again to the Syrian regimes. If Kaddafi can still turn up at the Elysee with his head high despite looking like an ageing rocker (Anyone noticed the resemblance to Johnny Holiday!) then surely the brilliant ophthalmologist from Damascus would shine with his elegant wife at his side.

"What is the Nationality of your Srilanki"?...
Picture from: http://www.middle-east-online.com
“What is the nationality of your Srilanki?... My Srilanki is from the Philippines”. This catchy phrase made many people laugh in the mid-nineties when it featured in a play in Beirut. ‘Srilanki’ and ‘maid’ were being used interchangeably due to the numbers of citizens from Srilanka working as domestic cleaners in Lebanese households.
For many years the Lebanese operated as if racism was an alien concept to their generally welcoming and friendly culture. Stereotyping a whole racial group was mainstream behaviour transmitted down the generations. In many cases the behaviour did not stop there and turned into psychological and physical abuse under the acquiescing eye of the state.
The problem recently took a different dimension. When a journalist visiting Lebanon filmed a report for French television followed by an article in the very respectable Le Monde newspaper on how foreign maids were being treated, many Lebanese were scandalized. Why! Some thought, they were shown as monsters? Others turned suddenly very patriotic. They felt it gave a very bad image of the country, which has already enough problems and working very hard to attract investments and tourists. Very few Lebanese people felt unthreatened even when they treated their maids with respect and sometimes even as a member of the family.
The polemic returned again a few days ago, when the International organization Human Rights Watch issued a report on the abuse of domestic workers in the Middle East, generously mentioning Lebanon. This report was widely disseminated, and the Lebanese public insisted again that this matter was unnecessarily ruining the reputation of their already martyred country.
But some solid facts from both reports cannot be rebutted and these are:
- Passports of foreign domestic workers are being held by their employers.
- Maids are working more than 12 hours a day.
- The Privacy of domestic workers in most cases is not respected.
- Cases of physical abuse exist on a large scale, and it is not as some claim very limited.
- Laws on improving the conditions of domestic workers are far from being a reality.
- Domestic workers appear in most cases to have obligations but no rights.
We highlight complaints from Arabs suffering racism in the West but wrap ourselves in denial when we are accused of subhuman and degrading treatment of other nationalities and races. So well done France 2, Le Monde and HRW for bringing these cases to our attention. Maybe now that it is out in the open, every Lebanese “Madam” will think twice before slapping her “Srilanki” maid in the face to teach her a lesson. And hopefully it will put some pressure on our governments to finally reform laws concerning foreign domestic workers.
Wishful thinking anyone!?...
